Editorial Reviews

Product Description
A Facsimile Reprint of the old 1852 book. One of the rarest of American cookbooks has a title which is too long to reproduce here. For brevity, we call it the Ladies Indispensable Assistant. Only three copies of this book appear in rare book collections of institutional libraries. These copies are to be found in the library of the American Antiquarian Society, in the Boston Public Library, and in the Library of Congress. Good copies of this book sell for as much as $100. This book was published in 1852, a year which was otherwise notable for the election of Franklin Pierce as a president of the United States and for the writing of Stephen Fosters Massas in de Cold Ground. No author of the book is listed, although it was copyrighted by an E. Hutchinson. The book contains something for everyone. It contains sections on etiquette, grooming, family medicine, cooking, and even the management of canary birds. It was probably an invaluable reference work for homemakers of that day. The housewife who didnt know how to make laundry soap could find out from this book, which includes a recipe richly worth twenty dollars. The book guarantees, in the language of modern detergent ads, that, if the housewife follows this recipe, she will not have to do any rubbing on her clothes. A recipe for apple sauce still sounds good today, although it would require a Boy Scout troop to consume the results. The title page of this book, which is also reproduced on the cover, is a case of typography gone wild. Typesetters of the period apparently liked to show off how many type faces they had, and whenever they had an opportunity they threw in a new one. Notice how many different type faces are used in this book as you go through this facsimile edition.
